Choir Director and Organist, Part-Time

The First Presbyterian Church of Whippany, NJ, is seeking a Choir Director and Organist to join our vibrant staff and work with a dedicated team of volunteers to lead our worship’s music. This position reports directly to the Pastor and is a part-time position, approximating ten hours per week.

The person we are seeking is passionate about creating spiritually uplifting worship services and is comfortable leading the choir and congregation in many different styles—traditional hymns, contemporary, global, folk, taize, and intergenerational song. The choir members are very committed and enjoy learning new and challenging pieces; the choir is also growing in membership.

Responsibilities:

-Direct the choir in weekly, weeknight rehearsals and Sunday morning rehearsals, which are fun, encouraging, and spiritually enriching, to prepare musical offerings for Sunday morning worship (10:15am).

-Plan and play organ and piano pieces as preludes, offertories, postludes, and other offerings in weekly worship. Accompany congregational singing.

-Encourage the participation of guest instrumentalists from our congregation (including children and youth), and coordinate their offerings in worship.

-Actively communicate and coordinate with the Pastor, Bell Choir Director, Church Secretary, Elders for Worship, Director of Youth Ministries, and choir members about rehearsal times and worship music planning.

Requirements:

-Music degree is desired. Formal training in choral conducting and organ and piano is necessary.

-Experience in church music leadership.

-Communication and interpersonal skills. We are a loving and hospitable church family, and we look forward to welcoming a new staff member who is inspiring and fun and enjoys working on a team.

Hours will flex dependent on liturgical season, but shall include weekly choir practice, performance at worship services, and special worship services and events. Availability for weekend funerals and weddings is essential.
